Spring Walk 2024 19th May

The sun shone as villagers and friends gathered in the Village Hall for a full English breakfast before setting off for a relaxing walk in the local countryside.

First stop was Anchor Church where the children and adults enjoyed exploring the cave and the dogs cooled off in the river.

After retracing our steps to the road the walk continued along the footpath leading towards the river, eventually arriving at the bottom of Waterworks Lane. The nettles in some places were quite ‘aggressive’ but relief was on hand with liberal applications of both dock leaves and sting cream. We returned to Milton via Waterworks Lane and then back to the village centre.

Thank you to the ladies who prepared and served such a delicious breakfast which set everyone up for the adventure

 

Spring Walk 2023

On Sunday May 21st the sun shone and around 40 villagers and friends gathered
in the village hall to enjoy a full cooked breakfast before starting out on the annual
Milton Spring Walk. There was an option of a long walk or a shorter version
heading back earlier to cater for all abilities.

Enjoying the weather the group set off along Main Street to Saw Mills, headed
across the fields towards the Ticknall road and The Bendalls, before heading up
towards Hangman’s Stone and Seven Spouts then through Heath Wood to
Foremark Church and back to Milton.
A lovely village event with both individuals and families taking part, not to
mention some very happy canine friends.
Thank you to the team who prepared such a delicious breakfast and to Helen
Skipper who led the walk.

 

Spring Walk 2022

Sunday May 15^th saw a record 43 people gather in the village hall for a delicious full English breakfast before the annual spring walk. At 11 am the walk set off up Mount Pleasant Road, taking the first footpath on the left and over to Sledge Wood in Repton. Then up Red Lane, past Loscoe Farm before taking the bridleway to Brookdale Farm. The views over the countryside and reservoir making the sometimes steep climbs worthwhile. From Brookdale Farm diagonally across the fields to cross Robins Cross Lane and then the back down into Milton. 

The walk was around 5 miles, but with the option of a  short walk returning early. Most Completed the long walk, a lovely family event with adults, children and 4 dogs all enjoying the spring sunshine in convivial company.

Milton Spring Walk and Breakfast – Sunday May 19th 2019

After a delicious breakfast in the Village Hall, a large group of walkers, ably led by Helen with her wealth of knowledge of the local area, set off on the Annual Milton Walk

There was a choice of a long or a short walk, but the blue sky and gentle breeze convinced most to go for the “big” walk across the bridleway to Ticknall.

The Walk started at a gentle pace, enjoying the wildflowers in full bloom along the hedgerows, a few peeled off near the copse towards Foremarke Church, whilst those heading towards Ticknall spread out as we took in the views across to the Peak District.

We headed up Slacky lane to Ticknall admiring the views across to the reservoir and noting how well the trees planted for the forest had grown.

Moving on down Chapel lane many saw a part of Ticknall they had not previously seen.

Turning left we headed across fields and through another part of the new forest to Knowle Hill cottage, a Landmark Trust holiday home with a rich local history.

Easily visible in the lake were some very large fish, – to the delight of the fishermen and children present.

The cottage at one time had extensive gardens fashioned into the surrounding landscape and we noted a lake and waterfall giving some idea of what the area had once been like.

Coming through Seven Spouts the views toward Derby and beyond surprised and amazed everyone.

Crossing the Ticknall – Ingleby road we were now on the home straight through Heath Wood down into Foremarke village.

Then onto the last stretch down to Milton looking over the Trent valley where most could recognise a landmark or two.

Easily visible in the lake at Foremarke Hall were some very large fish, – to the delight of the fishermen and children present.

The walk was 6.3 miles, with very little road walking, and took us nearly 3 hours.

Throughout the walkers appreciated the introduction to new routes on our door step, and “discoveries” such as Knowle House, Seven Spouts and the bluebells of Heath Wood.

Some of the children still had the energy to cartwheel across the grounds of Foremarke School and one of younger explorers commented, “My mum does not know what she’s missing this is amazing”

On return to Milton the more mature walkers were able to refresh themselves in the sunshine at the Swan.

Spring Walk Sunday 13th May 2018.

On Sunday May 13^th villagers and friends gathered in Milton Village Hall for a delicious full English breakfast before setting out on the Annual Village Walk in the Spring sunshine.

The walking group all set off in good spirits,  ages ranged from one villager yet to start school, some still at school, but for most school  a distant memory!  The group were guided across the well established footpaths towards Foremarke Church, then onwards to the Trent to explore the caves at Anchor Church.

The caves were a highlight for the younger members of the group,  and everyone delighted in the beautiful bluebells that lined the woodland paths.

Beyond the caves the group split,  with the more adventurous led by Helen, heading off via Ingleby and Knowle Hill Cottage, to take in the views at Seven Spouts . Meanwhile Neil took those with tired legs and Duck Derby tickets, back across the fields to the Foremarke School Estate and then onto Milton. A glorious adventure, in the sunshine and dappled shade, concluding with well earned refreshments in the beer garden at The Swan.

Milton Breakfast and Country Walk.  Sunday 21^st May 2017

A social event for all the family.


Hot breakfast baps and tea/coffee in the Village Hall 10.000am to 10.30 am, were followed by a gentle countryside walk of 3 to 5 miles with the option of returning halfway.  34 people enjoyed a hearty breakfast and 20 walkers set off on the walk.  Thanks to Helen for leading the walk this year.

Sunday 22nd May 2016.  A gentle ramble in the countryside  followed by hot two course meal in the Village Hall.

Spring Walk 2015
Sunday May 17th was the date of the Annual Milton Spring Walk. Walkers met outside the Village Hall at 11am, on a fine but rather chilly morning.
A gentle walk, led by Edward, was followed by drinks in the Swan and Pork Baps and Trifle in the Village Hall. A short Nature quiz, devised by Edward , rounded off a very enjoyable event. Many thanks to the ladies who prepared the lunch for everyone, and to Edward for leading the Walk.

2014 Event

 

The Milton Spring walk and lunch  on Sunday 18^th May was enjoyed by  25 walkers including four children. We left the village hall at 11 a.m. in glorious sunshine and took the road to Mount Pleasant and Ridgeway Farm. Following the footpaths and at a steady pace we walked through Sledge Wood then arrived back in Milton at 1 p.m. just in time for a pint at The Swan before a light  lunch in the Village Hall.
